Description

Perfect for learners who have secured one way to spell each of the most common sounds and are ready to progress past phonetic spelling.

In this stage, learners begin to understand that sounds can be spelled in more than one way.  They notice and use patterns to help them distinguish different letter combinations to spell the same sound.

A simple process is stepped out, guiding the writer to connect with an idea, draw a plan, and then use their plan to record messages.   On the reverse, learners have easy access to high frequency and commonly used words as well as some simple prompts for early punctuation use and the next set of frequently used endings.

The star strategy at this stage is to use what you know.  Drawing on their earlier phonological knowledge of onset and rime, learners begin to notice chunks in words that are the same and re-use them (e.g. if I know how to spell pink, I can also spell stink, shrink, blink).  There are 37 commonly used rimes / word families to be noticed in this stage – the Genius Card highlights some of the most tricky ones.
