Description

Perfect for learners who are ready to extend their knowledge of how language works and how it evolves.

In this stage, learners will develop an understanding of the relationship between spoken syllables and the alphabetic code used to spell them.  This develops each learner’s ability to make very accurate spelling attempts for words they don’t yet know.  An overview of abbreviations, initialisms, portmanteau words (blends), and acronyms gives an insight into the ways the English language has developed, and a simple prompt for understanding the singular and plural possessive apostrophe is included as a handy reference.

The writing process prompts writers to gather more information from research sources to give strength to their writing, and reminds them to make specific choices to make their writing more powerful and clear with thoughtful grouping and structure.  On the reverse, quick reference guides for emotive language, adjective order, Kennings, and personification sit alongside a prompt for the use of more complex punctuation, and an overview of active and passive voice.

The star strategy at this stage is to use the syllables.  The specific knowledge gained as learners master the syllable types sets them up well to be confident and accurate users of language.
